Pilates is similar to yoga but emphasizes your body’s core — the abdomen, obliques, lower back, inner and outer thigh, butt, and so on. For this reason, Pilates develops much of what exercisers need — strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture — with a much lower chance of injury than with other forms of exercise. The discipline emphasizes correct form instead of going for the burn. With so many exercise variations and progressions, you may have a hard time getting bored with Pilates.
Pilates moves require you to engage virtually your whole body. At times, you may try to strengthen one muscle while stretching another. The moves take lots of concentration; you can’t simply go through the motions like you can on gym equipment. And then, for every move you think you’ve mastered, Pilates has another version that’s a little different and a little harder. Pilates teaches you to think about how you use your muscles during your workout so you use them better in daily life. For instance, because much of the focus is on good posture and body mechanics, you stand and sit taller and walk more gracefully.
Pilates is named after its inventor, Joseph Pilates, a former carpenter and gymnast who invented the exercise for injured dancers but before he died in 1967 it was called 'Contrology'. Many of the moves were inspired by yoga or patterned after the movements of zoo animals such as swans, seals, and big cats.
Matwork Teacher Alexandra Papavramidi Julien has been practising pilates since 2006.
She is a graduate of Body Control Pilates school in London. This international institution is unique in training teachers a ‘Level 3 Pilates’ matwork qualification. This demonstrates that a teacher has advanced knowledge and the skills to assess and develop specific programmes for a broad range of clients, including those from the special populations category : pregnancy, bone health etc.
Alexandra went onto further her development and train for the ‘Ante-Postnatal’ certifications within Body Control Pilates. She currently teaches 1:1 post natal sessions to correct pregnancy muscular & postural alignments, concentrating on the Diastasis rectus abdominis.
Prior to becoming a Pilates teacher, Alexandra worked for 15 years in the digital effects film industry for popular blockbusters (see LinkedIn profile). Hours sat at a desk, left her with poor posture, chronic shoulder/neck pain and miserable mood. But within weeks of practising pilates, she became pain free. She also felt stronger and happier. It was these astonishing results that inspired her to train as an instructor.
Alexandra’s "past life" means she understands the stresses of a ‘busy desk-bound life’ and the effect this can have on the mind and body. She found Pilates a wonderful stress reliever and great for her posture awareness. As a result of her own experiences, with a recent birth to her baby girl, she knows how beneficial Pilates can be for office workers and mums. She is available to teach group and private matwork classes in Angers.
She looks forward to sharing her knowledge with her clients of all levels, while improving core strength, posture and flexibility.

"J'ai eu l'occasion d'avoir Alexandra comme accompagnante et coach en pilates. Elle est d'une grande douceur et s'adapte en fonction de notre niveau et de nos besoins. Elle a le sourire et le peps à chaque fois que je la vois !"
"What a lovely experience, to take part in pilates classes in the sunshine and under the swaying trees. Alexandra's expert guidance and calm friendly way made for great classes."
"I had many classes with Alex and I must say it was a wonderful help. I'd had a baby a year before and Alex really helped me get back in shape. Alex is extremely encouraging and very gentle so before you know it you're doing lots of poses you never though possible. If I ever strayed out of position she's very good at realigning so I always felt completely secure. Within a few weeks my posture was much better and I began to feel more toned. I highly recommend classes with this beautiful positive lady. "
"I had taken pilates classes at a variety of different places but I really liked Alexandra's approach! She was very watchful of our alignment and positions so we could get the most out of each exercise. I felt a difference immediately. She was really knowledgeable about anatomy and could create a great custom program for me to help me feel better. I sit at the computer a lot and have typical shoulder, neck and lower back aliments which she really helped to improve and strengthen. "
"I practised Pilates with Alexandra in London. She is great at explaining the postures and often does them herself to demonstrate them clearly. She focuses on everybody’s proper alignment with great care, so you feel safe that you don't hurt yourself and learn the postures correctly. Within a short space of time I felt more energised, toned, overall stronger and my posture has improved a great deal. She has a calming voice, makes you feel immediately comfortable and has the loveliest smile. One of Alexandra's greatest assets is that she is truly inspirational and can motivate anybody to want to improve themselves. Doing a class outdoors in the sunshine was blissful. I would highly recommend her classes."
